The eighth month in the old Roman calendar, October retained its name (from the Latin "octo" meaning "eight") when January and February were added. When the calendar was originally created by the Romans, the year began in March (in honor of the God of War, Mars) this meant that instead of October being the 10th month of the year it was originally the 8th month of the year.
